Why Blindside Communications?

In the marketing communications industry, there is a predictable tendency of naming webpages and even companies, after their founders and branding them as such. While I could have chosen a name like JeremyLutgenComms.com, it did not resonate with me for a website. To me, the essence of effective communications—whether it is marketing, public relations, media buying, or other areas—should not be solely dependent on the creator’s name. It should be founded on the connections you establish, the responses you elicit, and the lasting impact you create.

In my opinion, compelling storytelling often emerges from unexpected sources—untold moments, unseen perspectives, overlooked opportunities. During the early 1990s, I started skateboarding. My approach was different, known as “blindside skating”, or “goofy-footed". This involved riding with my right foot forward, a technique employed by 40% of skaters, including Tony Hawk. Skating “blindside” requires a different viewpoint, quick thinking, and unwavering trust in one’s instincts. This page is the space where I intend to express diverse perspectives, challenge conventional thinking, share achievements and rely on my intuition—this is Blindside Communications.

This mindset permeates every aspect of my two-decade career in communications. In a fast-paced and competitive environment, success is not about adhering to pre-determined scripts. I firmly believe that winning lies in shifting perspectives, reframing challenges, and engaging with audiences from unexpected angles. Achieving success in communications, akin to skating blindside, demands creativity, courage, and the conviction that there is no singular “right” approach—only the approach that aligns best with a brand’s identity, narrative, objectives, and target audience.

While naming a website can enhance the author’s recognition, creating something that stands on its own merits fosters enduring distinction.

That is the core philosophy of my page, Blindside Communications.

About Jeremy Lutgen

Originally from Southwest Missouri, I have lived in Missouri, Georgia, and now proudly call California home. I currently reside just one-eighth of a mile from the Orange County line, where I live with my wife and our dogs. Living in California has allowed me to align my personal passion for outdoor adventure with my professional commitment to meaningful work and creative storytelling.

I am a graduate of Drury University, where I served on Student Senate, contributed to the campus newspaper, The Mirror, and volunteered with the local PBS affiliate. These formative experiences fueled my passion for storytelling and set the foundation for my career in communications.

Over the past two decades, I have led initiatives across corporate and crisis communications, public and government relations, stakeholder engagement, marketing strategy, media buying and placement, and event planning. My approach is grounded in trust, transparency, and research-based best practices, with a strong emphasis on developing clear, educational narratives that inform, inspire, and build meaningful connections. I am a communications professional who embraces both emerging technologies and traditional media, delivering data-driven strategies that drive change and move ideas forward.

In addition to my professional endeavors, I am an ardent enthusiast of Jeeps, classic automobiles, and environmental advocacy. My appreciation for originality and authenticity is evident in my affinity for Alternative, Indie, and Punk Rock music. I am fiercely loyal—sometimes to an excessive degree—to my friends, family, colleagues, clients, and employers, recognizing that robust relationships are the bedrock of enduring success. Whether traversing the terrain in my Jeep, restoring a classic car (I am currently seeking my next project), promoting sustainable practices, or supporting a team, I consistently embody the same energy, integrity, and commitment that characterize my approach to both life and work.
